Anton Hulman is an American actor and director. From 1989 until 2009, “Tony” George served as President and CEO of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Hulman & Company. He was born on December 30, 1959, and grew up in Indianapolis. He has also served on the boards of directors for both organisations in the past. He was one of the founders of the Indy Racing League and a co-owner of Vision Racing. Many commentators, such as Gordon Kirby, believe that George’s actions as president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and in establishing the Indy Racing League to compete with the then-dominant CART resulted in a sharp decline in the popularity of open-wheel racing in the United States, as it divided the fanbase, and that it resulted in a significant increase in the national popularity of NASCAR. Towards the conclusion of World War II, Tony Hulman, Tony George’s grandpa, bought the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for $1 million. A former driver, George participated in the 1989 Indianapolis Lights championship, placing 12th in points and earning five top-ten finishes in the process. Before the Indianapolis 500, Mari Hulman George (Hulman’s daughter) acts as the track’s Chairman and gives the track’s famous “ladies and gentlemen, start your engines” public speech. Mari Hulman George was born in 1934 and is the daughter of Hulman.
